VILLA EXPERIENCES

Commemorate your special visit with a themed celebration. Examples could include a traditional Mexican fiesta, 80’s night with a DJ and karaoke, an elegant ‘white’ evening on the beach, a BBQ and piñata party, an under-the-stars movie and campfire with smores and much more.

A Spanish Fiesta is a fun way to experience Spanish culture...a country full of  color, tradition, and festivity. Traditional Spanish dishes are a crowd favorite as eating is one of the most important social rituals in Spain: not only is food shared, but life is also shared. Spanish Paella, Jamón serrano, and a Spanish tapas spread are delicious choices to ignite and savor the night. Finish the meal with a traditional Spanish dessert treat and some beautiful Spanish red wine.

And it wouldn't be a party without traditional Spanish music and dancing. Include a live Latin band to play mariachi, flamenco, bomba or salsa music. Flamenco dancers, or a solo Spanish guitarist, are additional options that will surely encourage guests to participate in a colorful evening under the stars.

Themed Celebrations

A Mexican-themed party brings with it unique foodie combos and flavors, tasty cocktails, and bold dopamine-inducing colors to stimulate the senses and keep guests dancing all night long. Experience an unforgettable night filled with salty-rimmed margaritas, a candy-filled piñata, and fabulous music by a genuine mariachi band or a local Tatewari music group. Fire dancers? Yes, please!. Throw on a colorful, flowy dress called a ‘fiesta dress’ or a guayabera shirt, also called a ‘Mexican Guayabera’ and get ready for the evening in style.

Le Dîner en Blanc, the pop-up outdoor dinner party that originated in Paris in 1988 - perhaps the granddaddy of the White Party - has spread across the globe, and is now held in over 80 cities in 30 countries. Not all white parties must be so lavish, but they all share a common rule: you must wear the theme color. The true appeal of the white party isn’t the color of the dress, it’s the elegance. Light the candles, pour the bubbly and get a photographer on board. Finish the night with fireworks! This is an evening for stunning photos and beautiful memories.

COOKING CLASS

Moments are made in the kitchen, enjoying some time with family or a group of your best friends—you’ll all share in the creation and enjoyment of incredible food. Learn how to create a variety of ceviche and salsas that will bring back memories of Mexico once home. Pair the cooking experience with a Mexican wine tasting. Yum!

TEQUILA TASTING

Much like wine tastings, tequila tastings give guests a chance to sample several different types of tequila, comparing them and deciding which one they like the most. There are five different types of tequila, each distinct and easy to identify from the next: Blanco, Joven, Reposado, Anejo and Extra Anejo. The varying barreling techniques, aging times, and ingredients used in the production process result in each type featuring unique characteristics. Whether you are tequila-curious, a connoisseur or even interested in tequila’s smoky cousin, Mezcal, there is a tasting for you.

An indigenous tribe living in the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico, the Huichols (pronounced wet-chols) are the last North American tribe to maintain their pre-Columbian traditions. Huichol life is a continuous cycle of ritual and ceremony designed to help them stay in touch with the Ancient Ones. Huichol art displays direct communication with their deities. When ceremonial pieces are made, all aspects from materials to colors are important.

The beading style known as Huichol is generally ascribed to a process of covering a 3-dimensional form in a single layer of beads, like a mosaic, but with distinctive patterns using geometric shapes and bright colors. In making their art and conducting traditional ceremonies, the Huichol people are celebrating their lives and the life of all nature. This is a true showcase of traditional rituals for guests.

The Bahia course is set in more undulating terrain and will offer stark contrast and putting challenges for those wishing to play more than one round.

Surfing

Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit offers some of Central America’s best surfing locations. The Pacific West Coast is blessed with many high quality break point surf locations and reef breaks that provide amazing variety and a premier experience for beginners and pro surfers alike.

It’s the geography at Punta Mita that makes it such a surf hotspot. Surf breaks occur on the north, west and south sides. That means a huge swell window of over 180 degrees and somewhere where the wind is always offshore. It’s hardly a surprise that consistency is one of the draws.

In fact, there are 7 different surf “breaks” circling the Punta Mita southern peninsula alone, from Anclote to Sayulita. These provide surfers of all skill levels with many options; from zippy reefs, to perfect point breaks and fun beach breaks. Traditional short board surfing as well as longboard surfing and stand-up paddle surfing are all very popular. Surfing lessons are also plentiful and taught by many top surfers. Experience a coached Surf Session designed for beginner, intermediate or advanced  surfers who want to have a real taste of the best waves in the area.

WHALE WATCHING

The official whale season in Punta de Mita runs from November until March. However, it’s not unusual to see them as early as October or as late as April. During the winter months of January and February, you are pretty much guaranteed sightings and spectacular acrobatic displays every day, sometimes without even having to set sail on a whale-watching tour.

Expect to see one of nature’s greatest shows! This is the time of year when pods of humpback whales and other hefty breeds head south from Alaska in search of warmer waters for feeding, breeding and birthing. Humpbacks are the most common whales in the Bay of Banderas. Orcas may also be seen in the winter. In addition to whales, guests may also see other marine life such as dolphins, sea turtles, giant manta rays and various species of fish and birds.

Wild dolphin encounters are a common occurrence as well. Traveling in various sized  pods, the highly intelligent Pacific Bottlenose dolphin is a delight to see in its natural  habitat. These sleek, fast-swimming marine mammals dart through the waters, oftentimes  leading the way as your adventure craft moves across the water.

BIKING & HIKING

Mountain biking in Punta de Mita is a great way to experience the local jungle and  explore nearby beaches and towns. There is a range of mountain biking available in the Sayulita and Punta Mita area, with trails suitable for beginners through to advanced riders. The main existing options are the Malpaso Singletracks (only available for guided tours) and Punta Sayulita (beginner level). Some of the first trails in Mexico were specifically designed and built for mountain biking by a local adventure outfitter. They offer a wide range of mountain biking, suitable for the adventurous beginner to advanced riders. The trails take you through the lush jungle in the area between Sayulita and San Pancho, with rides varying from mellow singletrack to challenging and fast routes with berms, steep climbs and rock gardens.

Punta de Mita isn’t always about the beach and its wildlife. Another exciting adventure you can do on this beautiful place is to explore its subtropical forest — particularly hiking the famous Monkey Mountain. And no, you won’t be seeing monkeys there but rather, its name was taken from the Spanish word mono, which in colloquial term means different. This refers to the clay figurines that the indigenous people of the peninsula left on the mountain for their gods.

There are a number of experienced guides that will not only show you the way but also provide a brief history about the place as well as identifying the beautiful plants and various animals in the area. You’ll also be able to see the petroglyphs that are made by the native Indians in this ½ day journey.

Protected as part of Islas Marietas National Park, these natural wonders are home to a number of native wildlife species, as well as some of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Mexico.

On the Marietas Islands, secluded beach escapes are everywhere. YELAPA & MAJAHUITAS

The Bay of Banderas is home to two of the most picturesque coves of the Mexican Pacific: Yelapa and Majahuitas. Home to sandy beaches, warm ocean waters, and tropical wildlife both on land and in the sea, Yelapa and Majahuitas are everything you'd imagine when you think of a tropical destination. And, accessible only by boat.

Cruise past picturesque coastal scenery, where dolphin encounters and (in winter) humpback whale sightings are common occurrences, to an area accessible only by sea. Once on land, take a scenic hike in the lively Yelapa, and home to a small fishing community. In this remote town located an hour south of Puerto Vallarta, you’ll find a pristine beach surrounded by lush jungle, colorful homes, and two breathtaking waterfalls. Expressive murals and tile artwork cover some of its village walls and staircases, making the hike an Instagram-worthy experience. You'll find street vendors with colorful displays of arts & crafts, hand-made pieces, and souvenirs, as well as others offering a local famous dessert simply known as the "Yelapa pie", made of tropical fruits such as banana, coconut, or lime.

Or relax on the secluded Majahuitas beach. With its untouched golden beach and emerald water, it's the perfect hideaway for a day of snorkeling, paddle boarding, and kayaking. For those who don't want to practice water sports, Majahuitas is also an ideal place for relaxation. With Swiss-constructed arenas, paddocks and stables, the competition horses have one of the world’s best environments with a vet hospital and exercise pool on site.

The club boasts two full-size fields as well as a so-called indoor field — named for the material underfoot as opposed to being enclosed, in this case. The entire club is surrounded by lush green mountains and tropical forests. Spend a day learning how to play with coach Martin Harriague, or sign up to play a match. On Sundays from November through April, you can enjoy the polo brunch with matches, live music, an authentic Mexican brunch, bottomless mimosas and that everlasting San Pancho sunshine.

TIERRA TROPICAL

Looking for some rest and relaxation instead? A Day Pass to La Patrona’s beach club, Tierra Tropical, includes the use of the pool and beach facilities and restaurant. With loungers facing the sea and an infinity pool, the Tierra Tropical Beach Club has everything necessary to pamper. The restaurant, open for lunch and dinner, offers regional and international cuisine to be enjoyed by the pool areas or on the beach. And from the bar, carefully crafted cocktails as well as a range of wine and beer can be enjoyed. La Patrona is easily its own destination and well worth a day’s excursion.

LOCAL CURIOS

The Village of Punta de Mita is home to a handful of small plazas showcasing upscale clothing boutiques, interior décor, Huichol Indian art, and some of the best in local and imported treasures. Beach boutiques and souvenir shops are ample along the main road in Anclote, found adjacent to the beach.

Recently, the nearby bohemian town of Sayulita has exploded as a shopping scene not to miss. A beautiful, bustling downtown with an incredible selection of shopping opportunities saw its first jewelry store open over ten years ago: Sayulita Sol Jewelry. Calle Delfin was still an unpaved dirt street! Today, it is a palm-lined  promenade hosting a plethora of boutiques that will entertain for hours. Sayulita hosts "El Mercado del Pueblo", a local farmer's market, each Friday of the high season. This is a great location in which to buy fresh local produce, flowers, locally prepared specialty foods, coffee, honey, handmade body care products, chocolates, fresh baked bread, desserts and more. Live music or entertainers can also be found at the market, making the venue a wonderful place to have a long afternoon lunch.

LA CRUZ FARMERS MARKET

La Cruz Market brings 170 vendors from around the community to sell their authentic products and delicious foods. The market also provides live music and cultural events at the oceanfront amphitheater.

Each Sunday you can find all sorts of treasures. Local artisans are happy to tell you about their creations and show you their wares. There are numerous handmade, local, and sustainably produced products from bread and organic vegetables to dressings and marmalades and freshly made salsas. Local, organic coffee, homemade granola, freshly made peanut butter, pickles, farm fresh eggs and home-made tortillas are must haves.

Mexican clothing and accessories are abundant. There are a variety of silversmiths throughout the market. The silver jewelry with local semi-precious stones is lovely. Always popular are unique, handmade home textiles and art including carpets, local pottery, cultural paintings, amazing Huichol beading and art work, and batiks. Handmade baskets, hats, leather goods, cigars, and tequila are also available throughout the market. And, the handmade soaps and lotions, homeopathic remedies and fresh local flowers make you long for a spa day at home.

When you walk out to the “point” on the jetty, you will find wonderfully prepared foods including quesadillas, empanadas and enchiladas, falafel, paellas, and fresh squeezed juices and elixirs. Fresh baguettes and smoked local fish are favorites. Be sure to pick up the smoked fish early as it sells out quickly! The displays are colorful and a treat to see.

To complete a visit to the market, a stop at the Mercado del Mar (Seafood Market) for fresh catch of the day is not to be missed. This fish market has it all…from small to extremely large fish, fresh catch-of-the day, custom cut or whole; dorado, red snapper, yellowfin tuna, prawns and lobster are plentiful. Or, perhaps you'd like to accompany a villa chef to the fish market in the morning and select your evening meal? Sashimi for lunch, perhaps?
